May We Guard Our Heart, Words and Deeds Carefully

… how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. … an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.

Lord Jesus essentially called the religious leaders ‘sons of Satan,’ a generation associated with the serpent, not with God. It was this evil nature that made them speak evil of Him. The bad fruit of their words (when they condemned Him) betrayed the bad root growing in their hearts. The importance of confessing with mouth the Lord Jesus and believing in heart His resurrection is plain to one’s salvation. An empty/idle word is ‘a word that does nothing, that neither ministers grace nor instruction to them who hear it.’ Because words reflect the heart, one can be rightly judged by one’s own words. Idle and wasted words are to be accounted for; what then of evil and wicked?

Prayer: Both Righteous and Loving God, if we had been neglecting who you are and what you did/do/are going to do, we would never take seriously the importance of our confession and proclamation of faith in Christ but be easily dragged by the world to become boasters, gossip mongers, slanderers, or even blasphemers. Forgive us if we had fallen and deliver us from those snares. Amen.
