We Could Not Really Love What Is Right and True without Hating All Wrongs and Lies

I have done what is righteous and just; … Ensure your servant’s well-being; do not let the arrogant oppress me. … Deal with your servant according to your love and teach me your decrees. I am your servant; give me discernment that I may understand your statutes. It is time for you to act, Lord; your law is being broken. Because I love your commands … and because I consider all your precepts right, I hate every wrong path.

We like the psalmist who expressed confidence in the general righteousness of his life dedicated to God should know that our lives are different from lives of those who do not follow God. It was only through God defending His servant, the psalmist, that he could avoid the oppression of the proud. The psalmist’s waiting expectation of salvation shows us that faith comes before experience. Out of the merciful impulse of His heart, God teaches His people especially His servant who has obligations to Him and asks for discernment so that he would know God’s statutes better. It is proper for God’s people to plead for Him to act because of many disregarding God’s word and His law. The Bible tells us what we need to know is right and true and we could not really love the truth without also hating lies.

Prayer: Sovereign Lord, the question ‘Are you willing to hate what God hates?’ continues to challenge many of us in our lives. Thank you for the psalmist’s reflection. It reminds us that with the help of you yourself, understanding your word is feasible and also of great importance because it will lead us into the wisdom and understanding of life. May we commit ourselves to love you truly by studying and obeying your word so that with Christ’s love and grace we can walk in the way that brings true blessing. Amen.
