They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.’ So he ordered that they be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ. …

Peter allowed the Holy Spirit to interrupt his sermon. The Holy Spirit was doing the greater work in the hearts of those listening, and Peter went with the flow. The moment of a person’s salvation is more likely at the moment that person surrenders to God and embraces with sincere, whole-hearted trust in Jesus. Those audiences’ unique filling with the Holy Spirit was having both the Holy Spirit indwelled/abode in every believer and a special empowering with gifts and graces from the Holy Spirit at the same time showing that they received the exact same Spirit, the exact same blessing as the apostles and first followers of Jesus did on the morning of Pentecost. So Peter stopped and called for their baptism showing their full acceptance as Gentile followers into the community of those who followed Jesus.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, for years many churches have often relied on raising a hand or coming forward of a new ‘convert’ at an evangelistic invitation as a gesture of indicating the moment of that person’s salvation. Thank you for this unique biblical example of filling with the Holy Spirit among Cornelius’ household reminding us to discern attentively the greater work of the Holy Spirit in seeker’s conversion and to go with the flow. Help us to reflect and treasure our own experience of being baptized in Christ in identification with His death for our sins and His resurrection for our eternal life. Amen.
