God’s Pronouncement of One’s Life or Death Could Be Revocable or Reversible

… If I tell a righteous person that they will surely live, but then they trust in their righteousness and do evil, none of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered; they will die for the evil they have done. And if I say to a wicked person, “You will surely die,” but they then turn away from their sin and do what is just and right – if they give back what they took in pledge for a loan, return what they have stolen, follow the decrees that give life, and do no evil – that person will surely live; they will not die. …

God told Ezekiel to speak to His people’s accusing objection based on fatalism which basically means that the good guys are good and the bad guys are bad and nothing can be done about it. God does not want any person to regard human destiny as fatalistically determined by that person’s past, either for good or evil. If people were to trust in their own righteousness instead of God and His mercy, no one is so righteous that they could not fall into great error and danger. If God pronounced ‘he will surely live’ to a righteous person or ‘you will surely die’ to a wicked person, neither was an irrevocable or irreversible pronouncement that the outcome would depend upon His principle of the changed life.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for reminding us that every righteous person could end up with a life dominated by own transgression. One person’s prior righteousness would not rescue that person on the day of your judgment. Someone who lived a prior life of wickedness was not pre-ordained to continue that way. They could turn and be spared in the season of your judgment. Thank you for your principle of the changed life that will make a huge difference to us in Jesus Christ. Amen.
