“Faith in God Can Be Strengthened Even More in Trial 在試煉裡對神的信心更能得著堅固“(1 Kings 列王記上 17:17-24)
Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house became ill … and finally stopped breathing. She said to Elijah, ‘What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?’ ‘Give me your son,’ Elijah replied. … Then he cried out to the Lord, ‘Lord my God, have you brought tragedy even on this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die? … let this boy’s life return to him!’ The Lord heard Elijah’s cry, and the boy’s life returned to him, and he lived. … He gave him to his mother and said, ‘Look, your son is alive!’ Then the woman said to Elijah, ‘Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth.’
The death of the widow’s son was a double blow to her because of the loss of both her only son and the only hope for providing her in her old age. Clutching the dead child tightly in her arms, she indirectly blamed Elijah and yet more directly blamed herself and her unnamed sin with its guilty memory being always close to her. Since Elijah knew God led him to this widow, with great heart and intimacy with Him, he laid this seemingly unexplainable and irredeemable tragedy on Him in prayer asking Him to remedy it. The son was raised and God provided for the widow on every level, not only with the miraculous supply of food, but also with the resuscitation of her son.
Prayer: Gracious and loving God, we confess that when our happy days of experiencing prayer wonderfully answered were eventually covered by a dark shadow of something like having our treasured thing or person, etc. lost, we might have our faith in you seriously shaken like that of the Gentile widow who lost her only son. Have pity on us for our little faith and empower us with your grace, love and peace to face our pain and suffering so that not only we could go through the trial but also our faith in you could be strengthened even more. Amen.
