2022-11-25 “How Much Do We Love God’s Word ?”(Psalm 119:97-104)

How Much Do We Love God’s Word

Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long. … I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes. I have more understanding than the elders, for I obey your precepts. I have kept my feet from every evil path so that I might obey your word. … How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path.

A fair Christian fulfilling a duty to satisfy the conscience may read, understand and even, in an outward sense, obey God’s word. However, only the spiritual one loves and meditates upon it as food and medicine, light and comfort, living as if being unable to survive without it! Our understanding of God’s word and ways is not limited to what we receive from our teachers. We can learn from our own study and meditation. Our rule for faith, doctrine and living is the Bible itself, not the understanding or interpretation of it from even the great men of history. Restraining oneself from evil would also help one understand and keep God’s word better. Time spent in God’s word should not be an unpleasant duty; it should be a sweet experience to be thankful for. The understanding we gained should give us discernment and the power to persevere and hate every wrong path.

Prayer: Lord of Life and Wisdom, the psalmist perhaps had just the five books of Moses and a few books more but we have so much more riches and sweetness in your word than he did. Yet what a shame that most of us seem to value it less. We cannot make ourselves reluctantly love something or someone but we can cultivate and increase our love for your word which is life and wisdom for our good sake. May the love of Christ and the moving of the Holy Spirit prompt us to do so. Amen.
