Have We Ever Missed God’s Crucial Point

The apostles and the believers throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticised him and said, ‘You went into the house of uncircumcised men and ate with them.’ Starting from the beginning, Peter told them the whole story: … Then I heard a voice telling me, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.” ‘I replied, “Surely not, Lord! Nothing impure or unclean has ever entered my mouth.” ‘The voice spoke from heaven a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.” This happened three times, and then it was all pulled up to heaven again.

Those circumcised believers were apparently more concerned with what Peter did (sharing a meal / having a fellowship with non-Jews considered to be a significant compromise) than with what God was doing with the Gentiles. God through Peter/Luke emphasized the importance of those events by repeating the story. At first, Peter thought God spoke this about food. But Peter came to understand the vision of the sheet, kosher and unkosher animals had to do with people, not food. There is a sense in which the sheet represents the church, having both ‘kosher’ (Jews) and ‘unkosher’ (Gentiles) on it, with no distinction or dividing line between the two, all finally pulled up to heaven.

Prayer: Sovereign Lord, many might have missed your crucial point of salvation by trusting Jesus Christ alone. Indeed we do not have to become good first relying upon our own good deed before becoming Christians. Once we become full members of your family, in your eyes no one is inferior to any of others in any way, whether high or low, rich or poor, strong or weak. Thank you. Amen.
