Question: How Much More Could I Have Done?

Jesus … watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few pence. … Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything – all she had to live on.’

Before Christ’s judgment seat, our service as Christians will be judged by how much we could have done as well as our giving is measured by how much we had left after making our gift and how much of us there is in it. No one gives at all until one has given all! No one gives anything acceptable to God until one has first given oneself in love and sacrifice. Indeed Christ did not live a normal life. He sacrificed many pure enjoyments to give Himself to the holy work of moral rescue. His conduct was determined not by what was legitimate or innocent, but by our human need. He pleased not Himself but lived for the emergency; and as He was, so are we in this world!

Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, you are more interested in how we give than in how much we give. You look more at motive and heart, giving in a way that does not call attention to our giving. Thank you for reminding us that the value of a gift is determined by what it costs the giver. It is our privilege to give to you, and we need to give because it is good for us, not because it is good for you. Whatever we give sacrificially to you, you see it and are pleased. Amen.
